Statement of Work

The body of work explores the themes of spirituality, community, emotional healing and self actualization. I drew inspiration from traditional folk art and fables. I was specifically inspired by Aesop’s fables. I’ve always appreciate how these narratives found ways about to talk about heavier topics in ways that are accessible and meaningful. The show will be symbol driven, using familiar imagery from the plains.

Using a mixed media approach is important to this body of work because it conveys a playful yet thought provoking tone. I heavily rely on embroidery and quilting motifs, which I associate with maternal qualities, craft, femininity, and community. Conceptually, I like the idea of using both “fine art” and “craft” techniques, because it combines two forms of creative expression into one whole body of work.
