Artist Statement
Utilizing mainly repurposed wools, linens, canvas and cottons I design and construct pieces that evoke a connection to the past - nature and life woven from history. Each fragment and remnant, once forgotten and discarded, finds a new life and purpose within my artwork, a blending of the past and present. I like to consider my artwork as history reimagined - a fusion of the past with a contemporary twist. Through a process of reconstruction, what was once “deconstructed” now emerges in unexpected ways.
The structure and anomalies of garments and functional blankets - seams, linings, needle marks, stains or holes - unfolds a narrative. It’s akin to crafting historical fiction, where every element plays a character, blending together to provoke curiosity and imagination in the viewer.
For me, every component is a hidden treasure awaiting rediscovery. By juxtaposing contrasting elements - old linings against robust wools, for instance - I offer an alternative perspective. Colors and textures harmonize, guiding the eye through a visual dance across the piece.
Viewers may find familiarity in patterns or textures, evoking nostalgic memories. And yet, it is the unconventional placement of these elements that offers a fresh perspective, inviting viewers to explore anew.
My creative process begins with a curated collection of textiles gathered over the years - each piece waiting for its moment of transformation. Starting with a chosen color scheme and a rough sketch I build a framework, allowing the piece to evolve organically. All pieces are sewn by hand using crewel wools and cotton thread. It’s a joyful journey of experimentation, where even the final outcome often surprises me.
Artist Bio
I am a textile artist living and working in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I create abstract tapestries and collages using textiles, fibers, and paper as my mediums.
My love for natural textiles and stitching began in my childhood. Hand stitching, embroidery, painting and drawing were central to my early years. Growing up in Minnesota - summers at the lake, camping in the North Woods, ice fishing with my father and tromping through the snow - instilled in me a love for nature. Memories of heavy wool jackets, Hudson Bay blankets stacked on porch beds, canvas awnings and fresh linens on the line fed my soul then and continue to do so today. My imagination and passion for design is energized by work of the Gees Bend Quilters and Ellsworth Kelly. The simplicity of line, color and composition in their work is an inspiration to me.
